Beginners and Rusty Singers

You probably enjoy singing around the house, in the car, the shower etc

You might not have sung in a choir before

You might have sung in the school choir but haven't done anything else for years

You may think that your voice is a bit "thin", or you can't sing very high

You may not feel confident about using your voice but you don't mind singing when nobody else is listening.

You may not read music, or you may have a vague memory from when you learned the piano or the recorder.

You might not be used to singing in two or more voice parts

What you can do:

You can have a private voice assessment with Chris Hale, attend a singing day or summer school or attend a choir development workshop - these are offered occasionally throughout the year.

You could join a choir:

Simple Harmony is a "learning choir" - songs are usually easy popular songs, in two voices, sometimes three if we are feeling brave, and we learn at a steady pace. You do not need to be able to read music. We give informal performances around twice a year and sometimes sing with another group for a "big sing" experience. Visit their website here

Hough WI Choir - obviously this is restricted to ladies only, but you don't necessarily have to be a WI member to come and sing with us. We do have a few non WI places available. At present they sing in two parts, sometimes three and are still developing their repertoire. They are also keen to welcome ladies with low voices (including the tenor range) so that they can develop harmonies further. In the meantime, they are a fun group to learn with! Website here

So you can't read music?

Well did you know that neither can these famous people?

Paul McCartney

Irving Berlin - wrote wonderful songs for FIFTY years!

Lionel Bart (he wrote the score for Oliver!)

Claude-Michel Schonberg

(he composed the music for Les Miserables)

Barbra Streisand

In the Voicefinders choirs, there are lots of different ways of learning the music and you are gently guided through the process.......

So now what is stopping you singing?
